Style development, Design, Animation, EditingVery Scary People examines the dark biographies of the most frightening serial killers in recent history. Broadcast on the ID network and hosted by Donnie Wahlberg, we designed visuals for all 3 seasons of the hit series companion podcast. The third season centers on the notorious Ronald DeFeo Jr., who committed the Amityville killings - a case that has inspired countless novels, films, and documentaries.
Our visual strategy was to develop an aesthetic every bit as chilling as the subject matter, reflecting the grim narrative. We extensively edited archival and stock photos by applying a heavy fractal blur. A transparent window serves as our central motif, gliding over the frame to imply the gradual revelation of the crime to the audience.
This project launched with specific limitations – visual assets had to loop seamlessly across all episodes, and the motion couldn't distract from the audio. Our fix was to prioritize essential themes and atmospheric photography to ensure the imagery remained relevant throughout the story. We opted for restrained, ambient animation to avoid distracting the listener. Below is an episode preview.
